Rabbi Henry Sosland

When Rabbi Henry and Judy Sosland came to New City in the fall of 1958, the title “New City Jewish Center” was a concept that applied to the New City Volunteer Fire Company on Shabbat and Jewish holidays and to the American Legion Hall on some weekdays when the newly formed Hebrew school was in session. About eighty families who had paid a small membership fee, had voted to affiliate with the Jewish Theological Seminary. The rabbi, who had grown up in Kansas City, was ordained at the Seminary after graduating from Harvard College in 1953. He served as NCJC's Senior Rabbi until 2005, when he was given the title Rabbi Emeritus. If one could find some guiding principle that might summarize his rabbinate, it would be to attempt to make everyone in his congregation feel welcome and at home within the Jewish tradition.

He is married to the former Judith Nelson, and they are the parents of Morton, whose wife is Esther, Rachel, and Abigail, and the grandparents of Arielle
