Grade Summary
Our Hey students begin the year in two critical areas: World Judaism and Bar & Bat Mitzvah training. The students spend the first part of the semester studying nine groups within the Jewish community and discovering their own Jewish heritage. This project, entitled Misaveev, provides the Hey class with an opportunity to learn about some of the lesser known subsets of the Jewish people. Students will put together a presentation just before Hanukkah for families and fellow students showcasing their studies.
Concurrently, the Hey class begins their Bar & Bat Mitzvah preparation as they learn Torah trope (musical cantillations). This training will serve them well as they prepare to become Bar & Bat Mitzvah while providing them with a lifelong skill. In addition to the trope training, the Hey class will begin learning the Torah Service. By the end of the year, our 5th graders will not only know the prayers and be comfortable leading the service, but they will understand the deep meaning behind these prayers. Our Hey class also spends a significant amount of time studying about the Land of Israel as they continue their studies of modern Hebrew language, and discuss the complexities of the Holocaust as they read Number the Stars. The 5th Grade is an enlightening year blending the old and the new, the past with the present, and the sacred with the secular.
