Opening School Letter - Morah Shari
September 2009
Dear NCJC Gan/Kindergarten families,
Welcome to a wonderful year of learning and fun! My name is Morah Shari, and I will be your Kindergarten teacher. We are going to learn about so many wonderful things at school – Jewish Holidays, Blessings, Mitzvahs, and the Aleph – Bet. I can’t wait to meet all the children and start all the special projects we will be doing together.
The Mitzvah tree: I would love to do Mitzvah notes with the children. Please send in a small note, for example, “Sam helped mom do the dishes.” The children have a great sense of pride when they share their special mitzvahs with the class. A small post-it note is all they need. Leaf /apple shaped notepaper would be great so we could post them on our class tree. I also have some apple shaped Post it notes if you would like to use them. Make sure your child brings the note to each class.
In addition, please have your child bring in a coin for Tzdakkah to each class. In the past, our coins from the tzdakkah box added up, and we were able to send dolls and games to a children’s organization in Israel, and money to an Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel, the Hi-Tor Animal Shelter and Jewish Family Services in Rockland County.
Please provide a kosher snack and drink for snack. Let me know if there are any allergies to food for your child.
Boys should have their head covered with a Kippa or hat.
The following is a supply list for your child:
1. box of crayons 2. package of washable markers 3. 4 glue sticks 4. 5 sharpened pencils 5. Safety Scissors 6. 2 Pocket folder with your child’s name on the front for work that remains in school 7. A small package of any color sharpies 8. 1 bottle hand sanitizer 9. A smile
Additionally, please bring in the following items: empty coffee/oatmeal can with a plastic lid, and an empty dry water bottle with a cap.
Each child will have the opportunity to be the “Shabbos Child of the week” over the course of the year. When your child is honored, we invite you to join us to help him/her celebrate this special tribute. A list with which students will be honored each week will be sent out following the high holidays.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Morah Shari Stopler |

Grade Summary
Our Gan students begin their academic careers at New City Jewish Center’s Religious School by learning the 22 Hebrew letters. In addition to basic letter recognition, our students have a brief overview of each of the major Jewish holidays. So much of what happens in Kindergarten is a sensory experience, and so not only do our students learn about various pieces of Judaica, they get to touch, smell and kiss them too!
A large part of the Kindergarten experience is bringing Judaism home, and so in conjunction with the classroom learning, students often bring home their self-created Jewish objects including a tzedakah box, seder plate, Shabbat box, and much more. Kindergarteners are also exposed to introductory lessons from the Torah including Creation, Noah’s Ark, and Joseph. It’s a lot of material for our youngest students, but they always seem to have a great time, enjoy a little snack, and learn about Judaism from the ground up!
