Grade Summary
Our Gimmel students spend a great deal of time developing and perfecting their Hebrew reading abilities. In December, our 3rd graders showcase their skills at our Kabbalat HaSiddur ceremony where they lead the congregation in services and receive their very own siddur (prayer book).
Beyond Hebrew language and t’fillot (prayers) our Gimmel students continue their study of the Torah by diving deeper into Genesis and Exodus. Additionally, these students explore the world of Living Judaism and what it means to be Jewish in a modern world. These topics provide an eye-opening look into our students and help them along their Jewish journey.
The Gimmel class also studies middot (Jewish values) as they examine some of what makes us proud to be Jewish. With practice at home, and regular attendance, by the end of the 3rd Grade, the majority of our Gimmel students are reading Hebrew fluently. It is quite a challenge, but we pride ourselves in helping our students excel.

Morah Andrea’s Opening School Update
September 2009
Dear Gimel Students & Parents,
Shalom, and welcome to a new year of learning at New City Jewish Center; a year that I hope will be educational and enjoyable for the students, parents and me. The goals I have for the 3rd grade class are simple; I want all of the students to develop a fluency in reading (print) and writing (script) of the Hebrew language and to begin to think about who they are as Jews in this world. I am looking to accomplish these goals by teaching both Hebrew reading and writing skills as well as exploring holidays, bible and prayer to help the students explore and understand the history and basis of the Jewish People. Finally, we will be looking to see how the children can apply some of this knowledge to their own life and work towards being good people and good Jews in their own world
There will be a few different textbooks used in class, but they will only be sent home when needed for an assignment. Homework will be assigned to the students on a regular basis, but not every day, sometimes the assignments may require family involvement. Homework is extremely important in reinforcing the work that the students are doing in class.
Below, please find a list of supplies that each child will need:
1 package small index cards & a ziploc bag to keep them in
I look forward to meeting all of the parents and students and finding creative ways that we will all be able to learn together.
Best,
Andrea Seigel |
