Daled - 4th Grade

Text Box:

Grade Summary

Our Daled students work to develop their own davening (praying) skills.  They received their own siddur in 3rd Grade, and now they use it regularly.  The 4th graders review Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday Evening Service), and direct their focus to Shabbat Shacharit (Saturday Morning Service).  In an effort to emphasize the importance of prayer, the 4th graders learn the historical context and meaning behind each prayer as they learn the words and melody, rather than simply memorizing the t’fillot (prayers) by rote.  It undoubtedly takes longer to complete the task, but our hope is that these students will develop a connection with the prayers and feel more at home when they pray.

The Daled students also reinforce their Hebrew skills and begin studying Hebrew as a living language – complete with phrases on how to order food in a restaurant and how to buy jeans at the mall.  As the students learn more and more, their Hebrew skills become more meaningful.  Holidays, both minor and major, are key components to the Daled class.  While holidays are discussed in each grade, the 4th grade spends time learning about the holidays in greater depth.  The key here is to engage the students using something with which they are familiar and then to enhance their knowledge on critical themes in Judaism.  The 4th graders also begin to examine their own Jewish identity as they begin discussing theology.  Using an outstanding textbook as their guide, the students are asked to address real-life issues and how they believe the situation should be addressed.  These classes always end up in heated debate and are often the topics of dinnertime discussion following the school day.

By the end of Kitah Daled (4th Grade), our students’ Hebrew and prayer skills should begin to flourish and their minds will unquestionably be searching as they tackle complex Jewish issues.
